Resolution in Support of the Faculty Senate at Idaho State University

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Whereas,          on January 24, 2011, the Idaho State University Faculty Senate passed a resolution to hold a vote of confidence/no confidence on President Arthur C. Vailas with 19  voting in favor, 6 opposed to holding the vote, and 3 abstaining;

 

 

 

 

Whereas,          on February 10, 2011, an overwhelming majority of faculty (79.6 percent) at Idaho State University cast a vote of no confidence in President Arthur C. Vailas;

 

 

 

 

Whereas,          on February 17, 2011, the Idaho State Board of Education voted to suspend the Faculty Senate at Idaho State University;

 

 

 

 

Whereas,          the time, resources, and work that faculty volunteer to ensure shared governance for Idaho State University demand appreciation and respect; and

 

 

 

 

Whereas,          a key component of effective undergraduate and graduate education is faculty that feel the parameters of their academic freedom are not dictated to them, but rather determined by their active input in the creation and maintenance of campus policy, community, and culture; and

 

 

 

 

Whereas,          the democratic environment created through shared governance practices enables Idaho State University to fulfill its mission to create conscious citizens that value the past, critically think about the relevance of history to the present, and create future leaders for a diverse global society; therefore, be it

 

 

 

 

Resolved,         that San Francisco State University’s Academic Senate formally protests the suspension of the Faculty Senate by the Idaho State Board of Education and calls for the immediate reinstatement of the Idaho State University Faculty Senate; and be it further  

 

 

 

 

Resolved,         that San Francisco State University’s Academic Senate supports Idaho State University faculty in asserting their right to shared governance and voicing their perspectives in the Faculty Senate, including votes regarding the leadership of their university.
