RESOLUTION ON FREE SPEECH AREA AND PLATFORM

RS91-97

At its meeting of May 21, 1991, the Academic Senate approved the following resolution on the free speech area and platform.

WHEREAS

The agreement reached by representatives of the University administration and students representing Shantytown included a University commitment to efforts to secure funds for an expanded and more visible free speech area, with a possible permanent platform; and

WHEREAS

A Free Speech Committee was formed in response to this agreement and charged with the responsibility for making recommendations to the Academic Senate; and

WHEREAS

Said Committee has recommended that the area under the trees in the small triangular panel above the main lawn be formally approved as the Free Speech Area; and

WHEREAS

The Committee has also recommended that a permanent platform be placed in this location; and

WHEREAS

The Committee has also recommended that a memorial be placed at the site of the original free speech area; therefore be it

RESOLVED

That the Academic Senate approve these recommendations with the understanding that the Free Speech Area will be developed and utilized in full accordance with both Academic Senate amplification policies and with SFSU policies on "Time, Place and Manner."
