Commendation in Honor of Nancy K. Hayes

Whereas: 
Nancy Hayes’ educational background includes a BA in English and Marketing from the University of Dayton, and an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago; and
Whereas: 
In August 2005, Nancy Hayes brought a wealth of experience into her role as Dean of SF State’s College of Business including CEO of nonprofits such as WISE Senior Services (to help low-income and at-risk elders) and the STARBRIGHT Foundation (to help seriously ill children) as well as serving as a corporate executive at IBM for over 20 years; and
Whereas: 
Nancy Hayes’ tireless energy and visible presence, building a cohesive College of Business governance structure, common sense approach to problem solving, fielding and absorbing distractions and disruptions both internally and externally to allow the college to focus on developing priority areas, and encouraging and supporting innovations from any corner of the college; and
Whereas: 
Her dedication to the College of Business was evident from her open-door policy, her knowledge of and interest in all faculty, staff and student concerns, and her availability and support 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year made it a pleasure and an honor to work with her; and
Whereas: 
The depth of her experience and her highly effective leadership style benefitted not only SF State’s College of Business but the San Francisco Bay Area business community as she forged new local and global partnerships, especially at a time of economic change; and
Whereas: 
In July 2011, Nancy Hayes was appointed SF State’s Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Upon taking office, VP Hayes immediately set to work making SF State budgetary and fiscal information open, transparent, and more easily understood, to the benefit of all on the campus; and
Whereas: 
Nancy Hayes has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to shared governance in the face of budgets cuts and university restructuring; and
Whereas: 
Nancy Hayes has been a respected and respectful Academic Senate colleague, whose approach to shared governance and relations with faculty can be portrayed by her soliciting faculty input and never losing her campus sensibilities while serving as Vice President and CFO; and
Whereas: 
As an active member of the Academic Senate during the academic year 2007-2008, Nancy Hayes played vital roles on sub-committees with Dean Marilyn Verhey, in the revision and/or review of many policies to ensure compliance with the “Collective Bargaining Agreement”; and
Whereas: 
Nancy Hayes will be greatly missed by her colleagues and friends at San Francisco State University; be it therefore
Resolved: 
That the Academic Senate warmly communicates its deep gratitude to Nancy Hayes for her exceptional service to San Francisco State University; and be it further
Resolved: 
That the Academic Senate wish Nancy Hayes all the best as she accepts new challenges and opportunities in retiring from SF State; and be it finally
Resolved: 
That the Academic Senate extend to Nancy Hayes an open invitation to return and visit us whenever her commitments allow.
