Excellence in Service Award for Faculty:

The excellence in service award for faculty honors a member of the faculty who has made outstanding contributions to the University, to the extended community, and/or to their profession via participation in service activities. Dr. Rosen has been a member of the SFSU community since 1988, beginning as lecturer faculty and quickly became the program coordinator for three credential programs (Physical Disabilities, Visual Impairment, and Orientation & Mobility) within the Department of Special Education. In 1994, Dr. Rosen transitioned a tenure-track faculty position and continued as program coordinator in addition to her 4/4 teaching load. In Dr. Rosen’s career at SF State, she has been awarded over $6,000,000 in grants and contracts that has been used to improve the quality of service and preparation within the Orientation & Mobility program and for direct supports for SF State faculty and students. Dr. Rosen has served the Orientation & Mobility field globally by developing several professional preparation programs that were the first and only such programs in other countries at the time. Dr. Rosen has served on the leadership of numerous local, regional, state, national, and international boards and committees of professional organizations. With her service to professional organizations, Dr. Rosen has increased the visibility of San Francisco State University and its Orientation and Mobility program at a national and international level which has, in turn, played a major role in efforts such as obtaining competitive grant awards, donors, and recruitment of students. Dr. Rosen served on the first California Commission on Teacher Credentialing committee for the preparation of Orientation & Mobility professionals and the Commission on Teacher Credentialing’s University Review Task Force, which evaluates university program applications for accreditation and reaccreditation. Furthermore, Dr. Rosen provides consultation on Orientation & Mobility for San Francisco Unified School District and throughout California. On behalf of the Faculty & Staff awards committee – Congratulations Dr. Rosen – it is a pleasure to recognize your many years of service to SF State and well beyond.

Genievive Del Mundo-Mendieta, gen@sfsu.edu

Excellence in Teaching Award for Lecturer Faculty:

In the words of Metro Coordinator Savi Malik, Genievive has been a stellar instructor and coordinator with Metro since 2016 …She comes with a deep knowledge of science content and knew right away how to support students in getting through difficult curriculum. She began by working closely with the outgoing coordinator, gathering data, lesson plans and best practices [before she was even] officially hired. This is her way—Genievive does whatever it takes to be of service and does so with kindness, tenacity and a deep desire to transform inequity.…She [asks her] students to think critically in their role as scientists, engineers and mathematicians. They read science-based studies on education and explore how race, class, and gender (among other things) play out in the labs [in which] they may eventually [work].

Our award recipient this year is Dr. Hsiao-Yun Chu. Professor Chu has a sustained and documented impact on student learning both in and out of the classroom at SF State. She has demonstrated innovations that have influenced the methods and teaching effectiveness of other faculty at SF State. In particular, Dr. Chu’s commitment to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in teaching is stellar, and she demonstrates this not only through participating in pedagogy development programs, but also by putting into practice what she learned to provide more relevant and equitable education that goes beyond the usual canon. Prof. Chu, as described by her peers, is a generous colleague who inspires others to work hard towards equity and social justice in teaching. Prof. Chu enriches our community greatly and we are honored she won the Award for Excellence in Teaching.
