  • Rebecca Carabez :   My name is Rebecca Carabez and I am an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and teach Community/Public Health Nursing. I nominated myself to serve on the University Academic Freedom Committee because I believe that academic freedom is essential to the mission of the academy and that scholars have the social responsibility to engage in intellectual debate without fear of censorship or retaliation. Academic freedom preserves intellectual integrity of our educational system and gives both students and faculty the right to express their views in speech, writing and other communication. It also gives freedom to students and faculty the right to study and do research on topics they choose and to draw conclusions consistent with the research. Academic freedom assures that political, religious or philosophical beliefs of politicians, administrators, corporations and members of the public cannot be imposed on students and faculty. I will do my best to serve the University faculty and students to preserve academic freedom with integrity.
