CALL TO ORDER: 2:12 p.m.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. More than
250 nominations were submitted for the Administrative Search Committee Pool, as
described by policy #S08-180. Approval voting is in progress. All nominees
receiving at least 50% plus one of the votes cast will be elected to the Pool.
2. Calls for proposals for the 2009 SF State Faculty and
Staff Development Retreat, to be held on Thursday, January 22, 2009, at the
Downtown Center, will be going out soon.
3. Nominations for the CSU Faculty Trustee position are due
December 15, 2008. Craig Smith, the current faculty trustee, has announced his
intention to FERP at the end of the 2008-2009 academic year; that action would
make him ineligible to serve as trustee next year.
4. An All-University Committee on Sustainability has been
created. Carlos Davidson and Leroy Morishita have been asked to report on the
Committee to the Senate on November 4, 2008.
5. The Senate Parliamentarian, Eugene Chelberg, Associate
Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of the Disability Programs
& Resource Center, is excused from today’s meeting to celebrate his recent
nuptials.
AGENDA ITEM #1—Approval of the Agenda for September 23,
2008
The agenda was approved by acclamation.
AGENDA ITEM #2—Approval of the Minutes for the September
9, 2008, meeting of the 2008-2009 Senate.
The minutes were approved by acclamation.
AGENDA ITEM #3—Report: Rob Strong, Manager, SF State
Bookstore: Timely Textbook Adoptions per Executive Order 926 and Academic
Senate Policy # S08-249
Rob Strong, Manager, SF State Bookstore, reported to the
Senate on the Timely Textbook Adoptions per CSU Executive Order 926 and
Academic Senate Policy # S08-249. Textbook adoptions for Spring 2009 are due
October 1, 2008; adoptions for Summer 2009 are due March 1, 2009.
Comments and questions from Senators included the
observation that a procedure must be established so that the Disability
Programs and Resource Center
(DPRC) will be provided with textbook information in cases where faculty
place textbook orders with suppliers other than the SF State Bookstore.
Currently, the DPRC is provided textbook information only from the SF State
Bookstore.
AGENDA ITEM #4—Report, CSU Senators: Darlene
Yee-Melichar, Andrea Boyle, and Jerry Shapiro
Darlene Yee-Melichar, Andrea Boyle, and Jerald Shapiro, SF
State members of the Academic Senate CSU, reported to the Senate on recent
Academic Senate CSU activities and its upcoming agenda.
AGENDA ITEM #5—Recommendation from the Academic Policies
Committee: Proposed Resolution on Suspension of General Education Curriculum
Revisions, Second Reading
Senator Dariotis, on behalf of the Academic Policies
Committee, moved that the Senate adopt the Resolution on Suspension of General
Education Curriculum Revisions.
The motion passed unanimously.
AGENDA ITEM #6—Recommendation from the Academic Policies
Committee: Proposed Revision to the Repeat of Courses Policy, Second Reading
Senator Dariotis, on behalf of the Academic Policies
Committee, moved that the Senate adopt the Revision to the Repeat of Courses
Policy.
Senator Levy moved to amend the policy by adding the word
“undergraduate” on lines 8 and 25 before the word “student” and by changing the
word “a” to “an” on lines 8 and 25.
The amendment passed by voice vote.
The main motion, as amended, passed by voice vote.
AGENDA ITEM #7—Recommendation from the Student Affairs
Committee: Proposed Resolution in Support of SF State Voter Registration
Campaign, First Reading
Senator McCracken, on behalf of the Student Affairs
Committee, moved that the Senate approve the Resolution in Support of SF State
Voter Registration Campaign.
Senator Levy moved that the motion be moved to second
reading. This motion was approved by voice vote.
The main motion, now in second reading, passed by unanimous
voice vote.
Chair Whalen declared the meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
