PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL
STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Senate Policy #S93-183
At its meeting of March 23, 1993, Academic Senate approved the following policy
creating the Professional Development Council:
A. Charge
1. The Professional Development Council, an all-university committee, shall:
a. advise the Vice President for Academic Affairs on faculty professional
development needs;
b. promote professional development on campus; promote an environment supportive
of research and professional development; and encourage the development of individual,
group, and university-wide professional development projects;
c. formulate and revise for recommendation to the Vice President for Academic
Affairs, and the Academic Senate, general University policies on professional
development, and project activity, and refer its recommendations, having implications
for academic policy, to the Academic Senate for review;
d. recommend policy to the Vice President for Academic Affairs for distribution
of professional development funds;
e. upon request, make recommendations to the Vice President for Academic
Affairs regarding interpretation and application of the foregoing policies in
c and d above.
2. The Professional Development Councils regular advisory statements
and annual report shall be addressed to the President, the Vice President for
Academic Affairs, and the Academic Senate.
3. Clerical support for the Councils activities shall be furnished
by and minutes made available in the Office of the Dean of Faculty Affairs and
Professional Development.
B. Membership
1. The Professional Development Council shall be composed as follows:
a. Faculty Representatives:
one member elected by the faculty of each college, the Library, and Student
Affairs for staggered two-year terms.
one faculty member appointed by the President for a two-year term.
one faculty representative chosen by each of the following committees from
among its membership to serve a renewable one-year term:
- Research and Professional Development Allocation Committee
- Center for the Enhancement of Teaching
b. One representative chosen by the University Foundation Board to
serve a renewable one-year term.
c. One college dean selected by the Vice President for Academic Affairs
for a renewable one-year term.
d. The Associate Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs.
e. The Dean of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development.
2. Constituencies shall elect/select their members so that terms of office
may commence at the beginning of the academic year.
3. The Council shall select a chair from its own membership at the first
meeting of each academic year.
