• Sen. Sinha – very excited about the AS Presidential election. We should be more proactive about recruiting students.
• Sen. Summit – the Deans have raised a concern about a resolved clause. Cedes time to Dean Sueyoshi
  • Dean Sueyoshi - Concern that there would be a mandate that internationalization in stead of having it happen more naturally from within
• Sen. Hines – in SAC we have been discussing that there have been problems with international and multi-lingual students that do not get the guidance they need to get into the correct courses.
• Sen. Olsher – add that there is a fact-finding mission and this document is consistent
• Sen. Platas – the footnote does not have a date. Can that be added/amended?
• Sen. Hulik – once the students are here, what support mechanisms are in place to help them navigate all of the challenges.
  • Sen. Thomas – that question was researched and addressed in the 2015 plan, SIC is not getting into the specifics in the resolution.
  • Sen. Thomas - RE: mission statements – it is not meant to be telling Deans what to do and would support new language suggestions and amendments
• Sen. Dariotis – re: missions statements should be faculty generated not Dean-mandated.
• Sen. Dariotis – we need to be cautious about using deficit language when talking about international students. There are as many or more benefits to our campus and all students than deficits and challenges
• Sen. Sinha – we should be able to address the challenges of international students
• Sen. Amjadi – adjustment is a huge thing for international students. Much of it is related to inclusion.

• Sen. Dariotis – background: the current and previous Deans have supported this minor and it has grown from the students who indicated that a mixed-race course of study should be more visible. 
• Sen. Stowers – this is one of a series of forward-looking proposals from the College of Ethnic Studies and they should be commended for reacting to the student’s experience and desires.
• Sen. Wilson – support and have a question: how are faculty added or removed from the list of advisors
• Sen. Leopardo – support. National trends show that mixed race demographic is the fastest growing in the US. We need to be in step with or ahead of the trend.
• Sen. Bloom – CA has the largest number of mixed race people. Students need to have a place to feel at home.
• Sen. Thomas – within our systems and data it is difficult to identify correctly our demographic
• Sen. Dariotis – at the College of Ethnic Studies 50^th Anniversary dinner, Jose Antonio Vargas repeatedly brought up his mixed race family and the importance of this kind of support.

1. Recommendation from the Student Affairs Committee – Proposed Revision of S18-196, Withdrawal from Courses; first reading

• Sen. Hines – moved to senate floor
• Sen. Brown spoke to the item – brought to the floor because there are discrepancies between the processes in different Colleges. In particular, the documentation requirement is inequitable and favors affluent, white students.
• Sen. Wilson – support in spirit but wonder how we change the logistics and the procedures. Also, have there been
• Sen. Albiniak – cede time to Jane DeWitt
  • Ms. DeWitt – associate Dean’s have been talking about withdrawals independently from this policy. They would like the W to be student-initiated and for students to be able to be warned with they are close to overall limits or have already withdrawn twice.
• Sen. Wilhelm – 1^st gen and international students may be disadvantaged by the current system
• Sen. Wilczak – the wording of the petition and signatures could use some work. If we move to student-initiated why do we have instructor/Dean interaction?
• Sen. Way – concerns are that this reflects the current EO
• Sen. Brown – students are being penalized by paying twice. This only defines who gets the prerogative. The online goes through chair and dean. Left in the consultation to allow for instructors to consult with students to find a better solution than a W.

• Sen. Way – suggestion to senators one what to read through, specifically “met in the major” section

PRESENTATIONS

1. Dean Sacha Bunge – Update on Diversity and Inclusion in Faculty Hiring

• Initiative was worked on as a team.
• Funded by the Chancellor’s office to support the advancement of faculty diversity
• Developed sessions to support equity and inclusion in the hiring process
• Facilitations were meant to have search committee members engage with each other. Determine what their values and norms were and figure out how to interact with each other and used that information to reflect on the job description and ways in which the position was advertised.
• This process was meant to be analog and really meant to be a conversation
• Sen. Wilson – Thank you for today’s update and the creation of the conversation sessions. Will this is expanding to hiring MPPs?
  • Dean Bunge – yes. Word got out and the Dean search committees asked to have these sessions and the idea of norms and modalities have been integrated in other areas too.
• Sen. Dariotis – was on a committee that benefitted from these sessions. Helped in many ways not only in terms of how we interacted with the candidates, but also how the members interacted with each other.
• Sen. Yee-Melichar – thank you for the hard work and the report. These are important issues and they will continue to be. Will there be any follow up or application of this to our part-time/lecturer faculty?
  • Dean Bunge – there were many people that indicated that this would be desirable and it will be discussed in Faculty Affairs and with the
• Sen. Hulik – thank you. Will there be any mentorship for new hires?
  • Dean Bunge – that’s a big question. We don’t have anything right now, but will be discussed and is on the radar.
  • Ms. Flowers – there was some discussion within the departments in terms of retention, but it would be nice to have process and procedure
• Sen. Chekuri – curious about any discussions that have happened about disparities regarding the law and hiring practices?
  • Dean Bunge – we are focusing on inclusion, we are not hiring based particular diverse criteria…we are developing a process that supports inclusion.
