  • Sen. Gerber moved to senate floor

    • Many concerns were brought up in terms of how the survey has been rolled out. Those concerns are reflected in the language of the resolution.
  • Sen. Stowers – it was rolled out in a similar way to the Mueller report. There were forums before the report was out.
  • Sen. Mooney – response rates were low and scheduling of meetings with regarding to the staff schedule was not very well thought out.
  • Sen. Way – Has the steering committee been invited to speak to this.

    • Sen. Thomas – has not had contact with leadership of the committee
    • Sen. Gerber has been in touch with leadership without much movement
  • Sen. Wilhelm – students are also concerned. Students were not really included. Also, there’s a timing concern.
  • Sen. Summit – speaking on behalf of the cabinet. We all work hard under challenging circumstances and sometimes what we do falls short of everyone’s expectations. Hopefully, the rollout of the report does not detract from the information found in the survey.
  • Sen. Wang – there were some questions answered
  • Sen. Goldman – in favor of the content of the resolution and there have been mistakes, but must point out that the 7% response rate is an average of all units across campus. Remember that some units had a higher response rate. The questions seemed to be a new way to collect “index card” questions.
  • Sen. Wilson – the resolved clauses really suggest a way forward
  • Sen. Stowers – understand that people do the best they can. As a political scientist it is common to look for strategies that are used to hide certain things. On this campus, we have a right to expect transparency from our leaders. Especially when it comes to campus climate. We want better and we deserve better.
  • Sen. Shapiro – support the resolution. Look at this as a prompt and not wait until we are invited. This is a call to action for next year’s senate.

    • Clause #8 struck unanimously @ 3:33pm
  • Sen. Thomas – aware of the work and believe the information will ultimately prove to be useful. However, this type of sequestering of information and control of the roll out should not go unnoticed. Supports the
  • Sen. Shapiro – called to question
  • Passed with 3 abstentions, zero Nay votes

  • Chair Gerber resumed the role of Chair from Sen. Albiniak

PRESENTATIONS

  1. Nathan Jones, President Associated Students – Report on the Activities of Associated Students during the 2018-19 Academic Year
  • President Nathan Jones and AVP of External Affairs Garrick Wilhelm covered a variety of topics including a description of what AS is and what AS does, minimum wage, student voter registration and voter turn-out, financial aid reform, programs on campus that AS oversees, including a bit more info on Project Rebound and it’s expansion and Gator Groceries which was started to address food insecurities and Housing Rights.
  • Sen. Wilson – thank you for all of the hard work on important issues especially the financial aspects. How do we get voter turnout to be better

    • ASI VP Wilhelm – students want to participate, but it is not a system that is built for younger people.
    • Sen. Wilson – how do we improve the ASI voting on campus?
    • VP Wilhelm – the issue is getting students engaged and letting them know they have a vested interest in the elections. Students don’t really know what they are voting for and how it affects their time here on campus.
    • Pres. Jones – some students don’t know what ASI is! They know the programs, but don’t know that it is a part of ASI.
  • Sen. Albiniak - thank you for the presentation and for your involvement in the spirit of shared governance.
  • Sen. Bui – thank you. Interested in how we can make sure that the students getting food at Gator Groceries are getting things that are easy to eat or easily prepared.

    • Pres. Jones – as far as we know the items are mixed
    • Chair Gerber – HP&W was holding classes on how to cook the items that were being given out.
    • VP Wilhelm – emergency food is also available on certain days.
  • Sen. Hulik – Thank you for all that ASI is doing to support the students in fighting food and housing insecurity in particular.
  • Sen. Stowers – thank you for providing the important student perspective.
  1. Adjournment – 4:03pm
