CALL TO ORDER: 2:10 p.m.

1.       Approval of the Agenda for October 3, 2017

·                                 Agenda was approved as submitted.

2.       Approval of the Minutes for September 19, 2017

·                                 Minutes were approved as submitted.

3.       Reports

3.1    Chair

·                                 Chair Gerber opened the floor for announcements. Jay Ward announced the upcoming International Education Week on Nov. 13 – 17, described IEW, and invited senators to spread the word about IEW to their home departments. He offered faculty a variety of options for participation – making your internationally-themed class that week an Open Classroom, or encouraging or offering extra credit to students for attending IEW events. Deadline for accepting on-line proposals is Nov. 3.

·                                 Sen. Foley announced that there is an open AS Faculty Rep position. Chair Gerber will be distributing a position description, there will be two weeks for submitting applications, and then they will conduct interviews. All faculty may apply. Applicants must have Wednesdays 2 – 4 open. Two weeks ago, when posters were posted from David Horowitz Center, Sen. Foley wrote a letter of support for the people affected by those posters. She invited senators to comment on her letter and get involved in working together with ASI efforts to work against hate speech.

·                                 Chair Gerber expressed difficulties with responding yet again to the tragedy of a mass shooting. She supported sensible restrictions on gun ownership. She talked about the Year of Conversation projects, and expressed hope that these events will be a forum for dialogue on a variety of public issues. She also directed senators to read the report from Campus Police on campus safety that is posted on the ilearn site.

3.2   Standing Committees

3.2.1           Faculty Affairs Committee

·                                 No report was given.

3.2.2          Student Affairs Committee

·                                 Sen. Shapiro reported that SAC will be hosting Norma Salcedo of the Dream Resource Center to discuss how to proceed to support DACA. SAC is also looking at how to expand support services for students, especially career services, and at how to help students with scheduling, both of classes and class/work balance. He lauded student participation in the committee.

·                                 Sen. Foley noted that the 23 AS’s are working together to craft initiatives to support DACA and there are student events at SF State supporting DACA. She recommended that faculty and staff work together.

3.2.3          Strategic Issues Committee

·                                 Sen. Gen updated the senate about the progress of drafting a resolution on budget transparency.

3.2.4          Academic Policies Committee

·                                 Sen. Wilson reported that APC is working on First-Year Experience issues, the Calendar policy, and the Large On-line Course Policy.

3.2.5          Curriculum Review and Approval Committee

·                     Sen. Pasion reported that CRAC is reviewing proposals for an MS in Business Analytics and an MS in Marine and Estuarine Science, as well as working on the Field Trip Policy.

4.       Luoluo Hong, VP of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management – EO 1095/1096/1097 training

·                                 VP Hong conducted Title IX training for the Academic Senate. Slides for the presentation were made available on the ilearn site.
