RESOLUTION CALLING FOR A WORKING GROUP
ON MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVES IN THE CURRICULUM

At its meeting of May 14, 1991, the Academic Senate approved the following resolution calling for a working group on multicultural perspectives in the curriculum.
WHEREAS |
Serving our community and meeting the educational needs of our diverse student population requires a curriculum which embodies multicultural perspectives and content; and |
WHEREAS |
SFSU has a long and distinguished history of providing curricular leadership in multi-ethnic education, particularly through its School of Ethnic Studies; and |
WHEREAS |
The recently-reviewed State master plan for higher education supports "efforts within each segment to make ethnic studies an undergraduate graduation requirement, and to integrate multicultural issues into the departmental offerings across the board"; and |
WHEREAS |
The SFSU Academic Senate has been urged to take leadership in infusing a multicultural component into all areas of the curriculum by such groups as the All-University Teacher Education Committee, the Academic Equity Council, and the University Commission on Human Relations; and |
WHEREAS |
The University adopted "Multicultural Perspectives in the Curriculum" as a major theme for its 199l faculty development retreat; therefore be it |
RESOLVED |
That the Academic Senate is committed to the above-mentioned principle espoused in the review of the master plan for higher education; and be it further |
RESOLVED |
That the Academic Senate establishes a Working Committee on Multicultural Perspectives in the Curriculum; and be it further |
RESOLVED |
That the Academic Senate charges this Committee with: |
(1) developing for Senate approval and Presidential concurrence a position statement which affirms the importance of providing a multicultural curriculum and the role of the School of Ethnic Studies in this endeavor and which is consistent with community needs and those of the State Master Plan; |

(2) presenting a plan of action for enhancing multicultural education in accordance with the position statement; and be it further |

RESOLVED |
That the Senate Executive Committee shall seek nominations and establish the membership of the Working Committee in order to ensure representation from a broad range of campus constituencies; and be it further |
RESOLVED |
That the Working Committee shall submit a progress report to the Academic Senate by November 1, 1991 and shall submit a final report to the Academic Senate before the end of the Spring semester, 1992. |
