Commendation in Honor of SF State Academic Senator Genie Stowers

RATIONALE: We offer this resolution to commend and thank Senator Genie Stowers for her extraordinary service to the campus community as an outgoing, long-term member of the Academic Senate of San Francisco State University.

Dr. Genie Stowers joined San Francisco State University’s Department of Public Administration in 1991, and promptly became engaged in all areas of campus life; and

Professor Stowers teaches classes in information technology, urban administration, strategic planning, budgeting, statistical analysis and data visualization, and the graduate capstone course; her current research interests are online service delivery in cities and data visualization in the public sector; and she has published widely on technology in government and urban service delivery; and

Professor Stowers has served as Chair/Director of the Public Administration Program (1997-2012), Director of the Center of Interdisciplinary Programs (1998-1999), Associate Dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (1998-2002), Co- Interim Director of the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership Program (2007), and Interim Chair of the Department of Secondary Education (2014-2015); and

Professor Stowers is completing numerous terms of exemplary service on the Academic Senate and its Executive Committee with great dedication and extensive expertise; her leadership includes but is not limited to the following: Chair of the Academic Policies Committee (2004 – 2005, 2021-2022), Co-Chair of the Strategic Issues Committee (2007 – 2008), Chair of the Curriculum Review and Approval Committee (2010-2013), and as an elected At-Large member of the Executive Committee (2013-2014, 2014-2015); and

Given her diverse campus contributions including, but not limited to, the Academic Program Review Committee, CUSP Graduate Programs Review Team, Ed.D. Task Force, Enrollment Management Committee, Graduate Council, University Budget Committee, WASC Steering Committee, many Administrative Review Committees, RTP Committees, and Search Committees, and numerous other committees, Dr. Genie Stowers was named the worthy recipient of the 2008 Distinguished Faculty Award for Outstanding Service; and

Senator Stowers' contributions to the Academic Senate have included diligent fact-finding and data verification, mentoring of new Standing Committee chairs and Executive Committee members, initiative and willingness to undertake complex policy revisions, and exemplifying the spirit and practice of shared governance; and
