Resolution Honoring and Commending Maggie Beers

Maggie Beers earned a Ph.D. in Educational Technology, Modern Language Education, Teacher Education, and Multimedia Development from the University of British Columbia; and

Dr. Beers joined SF State as the Executive Director of Academic Technology (AT) in 2007 following her work as the Academic Lead for a technology-enabled knowledge initiative and instructional development consultant at British Columbia Institute of Technology; and

Dr. Beers led teams that provided exceptional support of teaching and learning, faculty professional development for teaching with technology, and expanding effective technology services within the academic affairs units; and

As Executive Director of AT, Dr. Beers directly oversaw the establishment of the Teaching and Learning Team, a professional group of instructional designers who support faculty in course design for online, hybrid, HyFlex, and face-to-face instruction, creating accessible instructional materials, reducing the cost of learning for students with affordable learning solutions, and much more; and

Dr. Beers further served the SF State community as a member of the WASC Steering Committee from 2007-2013, drafting substantial portions of the campus WASC reports; and

Dr. Beers provided her expertise to lead the design of the Academic Technology services, spaces, and equipment for the renewed J. Paul Leonard Library from 2007-2012; and

Dr. Beers demonstrated exceptional support for and participation in shared governance, offering multiple informative Senate presentations and contributing to the development of the first and subsequent versions of the Online Education Policy; and

Dr. Beers served her professional community through multiple roles, including as the president of the Director of Educational Technology in California Higher Education (DET/CHE) from whom she received an award for outstanding service; and

Dr. Beers was a founding leadership team member for the Center for Equity and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CEETL), the heart of the university’s commitment to a culture that values and rewards excellence and equity in teaching and learning, and served as the Administrative Director for the first three years of CEETL from 2017-2019; and

Dr. Beers consistently emphasized the equity focus of CEETL by providing DEI focused programming, supporting the CSU SSGI Equity 5 initiatives, and facilitating CEETL to be a collective learning space welcoming where all could bring and share their identities and lived experiences; and

Dr. Beers was promoted to Assistant Vice President for Teaching and Learning in 2019, co-directed the CEETL from 2019-2022, and oversaw the expansion and enhancement of services to students and faculty during the COVID pandemic years of 2020-2022, including the development of the SF State Together website, and contributing significantly to the instructional continuity of the academic mission of SF State; and

Dr. Beers has consistently honored the humanity, professionalism, and agency of the staff, faculty, and students she worked with at SF State and elsewhere; and
