Resolution in Memoriam: Dr. Gail Whitaker

Whereas: 
RATIONALE: The Academic Senate is an inclusive community and recognizes significant leadership and long standing service by faculty, staff, students and administrators. When a long-term member and former Senate Chair passes away, it is important to provide a moment of recognition for their altruistic contributions in the form of an in-memoriam resolution.
Whereas: 
, the Academic Senate is comprised of members who donate their time, service, and energy to the campus community; and
Whereas: 
the passing of a long-term member of the Academic Senate, former Senate Chair and important contributor to San Francisco State University affects us deeply; and
Whereas: 
Gail Whitaker, a professor of Kinesiology in the then College of Health & Human Services, joined San Francisco State University in 1980; and
Whereas: 
Dr. Gail Whitaker was a member of the Academic Senate from 1986 to 1995 and was Senate Chair from 1990 to 1992; and
Whereas: 
Dr. Whitaker, a Professor Emerita of Kinesiology in the College of Health and Social Sciences, identifying herself as a sociologist of sports, was noted to be a very good teacher, teaching rigorous and interesting courses like the popular Sociology of Sport class, and publishing scholarly works on gender, feminist analysis, and homophobia in sports, and courageously speaking out on homophobia in sports long before it became popular to do so; and
Whereas: 
Dr. Whitaker served as Interim Dean of the newly created College of Health and Human Services when it first formed and as Acting Dean of the former School of Health, Physical Education, Recreation Leisure Studies; and
Whereas: 
Dr. Whitaker also served as Dean of the College of Extended Learning as well as Associate Vice President for Academic Program Development; and
Whereas: 
Dr. Whitaker was an inherently kind and gracious person who assisted and mentored numerous faculty throughout the University and who was a role model to many; and
Whereas: 
, Dr. Whitaker passed on March 4, 2019 accompanied by her partner and spouse of 40 years, Jan Andreasen; and therefore be it
Resolved: 
That the 2018-19 Academic Senate recognize and thank Dr. Gail Whitaker in memoriam for her life of service to San Francisco State University, the SF State Academic Senate, and her students; and be it further
Resolved: 
That the 2018-19 Academic Senate bow our heads in a moment of silence in Dr. Whitaker’s memory as an invaluable colleague and friend.
