WHAT is the Academic Senate, and HOW does it work ?

The San Francisco State Academic Senate develops policies & procedures regarding faculty & administrative appointments, curriculum, business & fiscal matters, campus development, academic standards, University goals; examples of which include the following:

  • appointment and review of academic administrators;
  • faculty appointment, retention, tenure, promotion, leave and dismissal;
  • curriculum and instruction;
  • Library and research;
  • student affairs, admissions, retention, awarding of grades and graduation;
  • business and fiscal matters;
  • campus development;
  • academic and professional standards;
  • mission and goals;
  • other matters about the welfare and excellence of the University.

The Senate Plenary meetings are held on alternate Tuesdays from 2p - 5p at the Seven Hills Conference Center. Agendas can be found on the left home bar titled, "Senate Agendas".

Opposite Tuesdays, Standing Committee meetings are held from 2p - 4p. Location of meetings can be found on left home bar titled, "Committee Information".

HOW can I get involved?

As a SFSU community member, your contribution to the shared governance of our university is always appreciated.  If you are interested in serving on the ACADEMIC SENATE and/or a SENATE SUBCOMMITTEE please contact the Senate Office at senate@sfsu.edu.

University Opening Convocation

Thursday, August 22, 2019

Please join us for a celebration of the start of a new academic year. Hear from San Francisco State University President Lynn Mahoney and other campus leaders about the challenges and opportunities in the coming year and help welcome our new faculty, staff and administrators.

 All faculty and staff are welcome.

A reception with light food and beverages and a resource fair will begin at 8:30 a.m. inside CA 152, 153 and 154 across from the McKenna Theatre. The Convocation begins at 10 a.m. and ends at noon. 

We welcome persons with disabilities and will provide reasonable accomodations upon request. If you would like reasonable accomodations for this event, please contact the Academic Senate office at (415) 338-1264 or senate@sfsu.edu as soon as possible so your request may be reviewed.

The VOTING PERIOD for the 2019 Academic Senate elections has been changed. Elections begin April 10th!

If you casted your vote prior to April 10th, please do so again.
